It was cold, windy and probably a day that no one wanted to play softball. But, the Willow Run Lady Flyers took the long bus ride on Monday and stood the test of the elements to knock off the Melvindale Cardinals 16-13.

"It was a nice win for us," Lady Flyers Coach Duane Edwards said.
Miranda Fleming stood tall against Melvindale striking out 11 Cardinal batters. They managed nine hits against the junior pitcher.
The good news was that Willow Run cranked out 10 hits to earn the win. Junior Shelby Johnson led the offensive attack with four hits in five at bats including a double and four RBI.
Tiffany Duperon was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, Tiffany Priess had a triple and an RBI and Charlise Randall had a double and an RBI.
Later in the week, the team had a very tough and emotional battle with Dearborn Heights Annapolis.
"It was a pitching dual," he said. "They scored in the second inning on an inside the park homerun."
In the seventh inning the Flyers had two on with two outs. The locals hit the ball and right fielder caught it over her shoulder and bare handed.
"It was a let down," he said. "I think it hurt us in the second game."
For that game Fleming had eight strikeouts. Johnson was 2-for-3; Emmalle McCurdy and Duperon were both 1-for-3.
In game two, the Flyers jumped out 2-0 but ended up losing 16-2 in five innings to the Cougars.
"We were tired and not focused," he said. "We had five hits in the game. We made six errors in that game."
Fleming had six strikeouts, six walks and gave up nine hits. Duperon and Priess both went 2-for-3 and Johnson had one hit."
Last Thursday the Flyers battled Wayne Memorial and lost 10-2. Willow Run managed just four hits and all three were in the first inning.
Fleming only had two strikeouts. Johnson was 2-for-3, Stephanie Reynolds was 1-for-3 with a single and two RBI and Duperon had one hit.
Willow Run is 7-6 overall and 4-0 in the Mega Gold. Today they play at River Rouge and tomorrow they host Ypsilanti on Friday. The second game on Friday night at 6 p.m. will be the alumni verses the players and the proceeds go the Brest Cancer Awareness.
